1.DCA - DAWN

In the early hours of a frigid Friday morning, under cover of night and a clutch ride from a friend, we made a break for it.

Departing from DCA, we had decided to escape the cold of another DC winter, if only for a fleeting 3 days, and head South. We had come in search of experiencing the everlasting sun, art and good times the first weekend of December in Miami was renown for.

2.COCONUT GROVE - AFTERNOON

An inconspicuous cottage nestled in the serenity and calm just outside the push and pull of Miami. It's about 3:00 in the afternoon and we're getting antsy awaiting the arrival of some new friends from the area.

Pull Up

Finally, a black Acura TL pulls up and parks, somewhere between the road and the white fence separating our cottage from reality.

Doors open, and with restrained excitement, our guests emerge from the vehicle.  Gio of SKNDRLS steps out, still in mid-conversation with one of the guys in his car.  Along with him are Laz of Not Exactly Human, Laz's NEH compadres Aaron and Dino, and resident Floridian man of many talents, Chris Cadaver (previously introduced in After-Hours Intrigue).

A Plan Is Formed

These are the kids at the forefront of Florida's burgeoning creative movement, well-known online by their assorted aliases and degree of accomplishments, but casual and jovial in person.

After exploring the cottage grounds and various exclamations of things being lit and whatnot, a plan starts to take shape.

Gio:

"Yo Marsh, you guys already eat? I'm tryna order some pizza over here and really get things goin'."

Gio, always planning the next step.

Pizza, always a good choice.

Chris:

"Lando...can I see your camera?"

Lando acquiesces, handing over his cherished weapon of choice to Chris.

Seeming to share one mind, Laz and Chris spring into action, framing shots, rearranging the scenery and bungalow furniture, all the while, formulating a quick narrative to accompany the visuals.

Ahad, our cohort from up north and purveyor of the effortlessly casual, is also on hand to make sure everything that needs to be captured, is.

A production, with limited resources and zero preparation, begins.

Gio completes the kickback vibe, spinning records from his carefully curated LTENGHT (pronounced "Late Night") project, while Dino and Aaron are trying on the secret cotton wears we managed to smuggle past airport security days earlier.

The late arrival of Emfigg, the reserved, Leica-slinging compadre of the Florida crew, adds new dimensions to the electric creative energy on the sleepy grounds of the Coconut Cottage.

Filming Ends

Timing is crucial in Miami.

Just as filming is wrapping up, Lando receives a text from friend, and post-pop artist, Aaron Kai who is finishing up his mural in Wynwood, a short drive away. It's a one word reply to a question Lando asked earlier.

Aaron:

"Yee!"

In this instance, timing is perfect. We haphazardly clean up, clear out and head over.

3. Wynwood Art District - Dusk

The sunset hangs at a hazy orange/pink in the distance. Only a small fraction of the past weekend's visitors are still walking about in the Art District as we pull up.

Aaron is crouched down, between a taco restaurant and a coffee shop, putting the final touches on his mural (which he expanded due to the popularity of his initial concept).

Over the course of a conversation as casual as it is drunk, the subject of our haven in DC comes up.  Aaron, who has never been to Washington DC, jumps at the idea of coming to The District to stamp the city with his signature art.

We assume most of the promises and enthusiasm will evaporate following the return of sense and sobriety, so we don't think too much of it in the moment.

The next day, as we are set to leave Miami, Lando's phone lights up.

Aaron:

"Yee! Good seeing you again, let's paint in DC"
